FAQ
What is a passive closed track etched radon detector? How does it measure radon?
We manufacture and analyse radon levels using a passive closed track etched radon detector. The main component is the PADC element, a radiation sensitive polycarbonate. The surface of the PADC element is damaged by alpha particles from radon and its decay products, producing microscopic invisible tracks, the tracks are made visible by chemicals during the etch process.
The radon exposure is assessed by counting the number of tracks on a detector element, using a microscope-based analysis system and software. The measured concentration is calculated using the days on test.
Different between screening and 3 month test?
Radon levels can fluctuate throughout short periods of time, therefore the UKHSA do not validate short term testing. It can be a helpful snapshot but we would most definitely recommend a full validated 3-month test is carried out to fully understand radon levels in your home or workplace. Three month tests (90 days or more) are validated by UKHSA.
What checks do Testair conduct to ensure quality of measurement?
The analysis system is calibrated at regular intervals and control pieces are tested daily to ensure accuracy. We are subject to a yearly global intercomparison test with UKHSA to validate our testing procedures.
